Eboo Patel's core belief is that religion can be a bridge of cooperation bringing together people of diverse religious backgrounds to serve the common good. Named by US News & World Report as one of America's Best Leaders of 2009, Eboo Patel is the Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core, a Chicago-based organization building the global interfaith youth movement. Patel will share his vision on how American colleges and universities can successfully model interfaith cooperation within and across groups on campus and in the process strengthen civic commitments throughout American society and the world.

Luncheon and Panel Discussion - Pathways to Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement: What the Nation Needs from Higher Education
Friday, October 14, 2011, 12:15 - 2:00 p.m.
This panel discussion will offer findings from a national report, Reversing the Civic Recession, produced for the Department of Education by AAC&U in partnership with Global Perspective Institute Inc. The panel will focus specifically on the emerging frontiers of civic learning revealed in next generation campus practices and point to the kind of institutional investment in educating for democracy and civic responsibility needed to make such learning expected of every college student. Participants will have an opportunity to pose questions about the purposes of the report, plans to advance civic engagement and learning, and how these emerging trends might inform the work of individuals across different kinds of institutions.

Plenary: Education for Democracy, Civic Leadership, and Public Work
Saturday, October 15, 2011, 11:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m.
President Murphy will discuss the ways in which colleges can tap and expand students' skills to address the central issues of their communities, both local and global, with heightened capacities, deeper understandings, and an expanded sense of agency. As founder of De Anza's Institute for Community and Civic Engagement and a key organizer of the Democracy Commitment: A Community College Initiative, he will challenge participants to design new educational structures that foster participatory practices for students to work collectively in public arenas on issues of common concern. Murphy will argue that more than ever, civic aims must become a priority for higher education to assure the political and social health of our nation.
